BINGHAMTON, NY. – Francis Perron scored the eventual game-winning goal in the second period as the Binghamton Senators defeated the Toronto Marlies 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Marlies got on the board first on a power-play chance with less than three minutes remaining in the opening frame. Brendan Leipsic sent a pass to Kerby Rychel in front of the net who then backhanded the puck along to Kasperi Kapanen in the left faceoff circle. Kapanen sent a shot top shelf past Chris Driedger for his 14th goal of the season.
The B-Sens answered back with a goal of their own just over a minute later when Ben Harpur scored his first of the year. Patrick Sieloff took a pass from Nick Paul to the top of the blue line where he sent a cross-ice feed to Harpur. The defenseman ripped a shot past Garret Sparks and tied the game up going into the first intermission. The Marlies led the shots for the first period 11-7.
Perron scored the lone goal of the second period at the 3:01 mark. Buddy Robinson held the puck in the top of the slot before finding Perron in the right faceoff circle who then sent the puck top shelf. Chad Nehring had the secondary assist on Perron’s fifth goal of the year. Binghamton took the 2-1 lead into the final intermission outshooting Toronto 24-21.
Max McCormick notched an empty-net insurance goal with less than two minutes to play in the game to secure the win and put the final score at 3-1.
Driedger picked up the win stopping 25 shots faced while Sparks had 29 saves in the losing effort.
The B-Sens travel to Syracuse on Friday, December 30, for a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Crunch. The Binghamton Senators are back at home for its annual New Years Eve game on Saturday, December 31, at a special 6:05 p.m. start time when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins return to town. The Executive Office will be open to purchase tickets on Thursday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until the second intermission.
