Bears Maul Purple Knights for Fourth Straight Win

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT.-Twice Saint Michael’s College (0-9) grabbed one-goal leads over the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (6-4-2), but each time the Bears answered. Potsdam scored five unanswered goals for a 6-2 win over the Purple Knights on Saturday afternoon. Senior assistant captain Amanda Lucky(Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University) had two goals and an assist for the Bears, while freshman forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) scored two and senior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) had a game-high four points with a goal and three assists.

Saint Michael’s drew first blood in a tightly contested first period. At 7:48, Erin Dywer capitalized on a Potsdam turnover, burying a rebound for a 1-0 lead. The Bears had opportunities in the first period, outshooting the Knights 8-6, but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Potsdam started quickly in the second period. On the power play, Ott evened the game while one-timing a pass from Silveira at2:34. Senior captain Brittany Lucky notched the second assist on the goal. Eight minutes later, Dwyer struck again on a two-on-one break to give Saint Mike’s its final lead of the contest. Ott recorded another power-play marker at 13:42, tipping home a Silveira slap shot to tie the score at 2-2. Brittany Lucky also assisted on the goal. The shots were even at seven all in the middle stanza the score remained the same at the second break.

The Bears broke the game open in the third period. Amanda Lucky scored the eventual game winner just 53 seconds into the final period on tip from a shot from freshman forward Kaylen Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss Prep). Sophomore forwardSally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) recorded the second assist on the goal. Less than five minutes later, junior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) knocked home a loose puck for a 4-2 advantage. Senior assistant captainJenn Crawford (Burlington, Ontario/Stony Creek Sabres) and freshman forward Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers) assisted on the goal. At 9:40, Silveira scored with helpers from Amanda Lucky and Mooney to build a three-goal lead. With time ticking down and a power play, the Purple Knights took a chance and pulled goalie Abbey Burke. However, Amanda Luckysealed their fate with a shorthanded empty-net goal to cap the scoring at 6-2.

Sophomore goalie Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) stopped 21 shots to improve to 5-3-2 on the season. Burke made 24 saves in the loss. Potsdam was 2-3 on the man-advantage, while Saint Michael’s finished 0-5.

The Bears are now 8-0-1 all-time against the Purple Knights.

Potsdam is off until Jan. 7, when the Bears head to Castleton State for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Spartans.
