Bears Men’s Hockey, Elks Lodge team up for “Sweets for Soldiers” night February 15

The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team and Potsdam Elks Lodge #2074 are joining forces to hold “Sweets for Soldiers” night on Friday, Feb. 15. The Bears are battling Oswego State at 7:00 p.m. that evening in Maxcy Hall Ice Arena and are encouraging fans attending to join them in bringing candy bars as a donation for our soldiers overseas.

The Elks Lodge, who will have a table set up in the main Maxcy corridor on game night, will be collecting candy bars at various events throughout the North Country as part of their initiative held annually in the month of February. The candy bars collected will be donated to the Fort Drum United Service Organization (USO), primarily for distribution to soldiers as they deplane at the base from overseas deployments. The USO operates the “There When They Land” snack bar at the Fort Drum airfield and has found that one of the first requests returning soldiers have is for candy bars unavailable during deployment.

The candy bars will also be available for redeploying service members, active duty service members and recruits at the Fort Drum Main Center and, in the future, the planned USO Center at the Syracuse Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).

Maxcy Hall and the Elks Club Troop #2074 will also be collecting candy bars for “Sweets for Soldiers” on Friday, Feb. 22, during the Section X Class B High School Boys and Girls Basketball Championship games at 6:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.

Over 46,000 candy bars have been donated to date. Help the Elks Club make it 50,000!!!

For those fans that can’t make the game, donations of funds or candy bars can be delivered to the Potsdam Elks Lodge located at 10 Elm Street or sent to the Lodge at P.O. Box 415, Potsdam N.Y. 13676-0415. Questions may be directed to Mary at 315-566-9058.
