POTSDAM, N.Y.-The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team has announced its captains for upcoming the 2019-20 campaign. Senior forward Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers) will serve as the Bears captain. Fellow seniors Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres), Sean Winikates (Phoenix, Ariz./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers), Nate Zweig (Binghamton, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) and Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) are the team’s assistant captains.
Potsdam 11th year head coach Chris Bernard has complete faith in his squad’s captain.
“Vinny is an exceptional student-athlete and represents our program the right way in every manner,” said Bernard. “The example that he sets daily, along with the sincerity of his intentions, has earned him the highest respect from his teammates and our staff.”
The coach is pleased with his leadership group all around.
“Each of these players provide leadership by demonstrating their commitment to our program every day,” Bernard added. “Individually, they each bring their own element to influence the team in a positive way. Collectively their work-ethic is outstanding.”
The Bears will change up the assistants a bit during the season with Ferrell and Zweig wearing the letters on the road and Young and Winikates donning the A’s at home.
Guimond has recorded 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in 63 career games and was third on the Bears in scoring last season with 17 points (6g, 11a). Ferrell, a forward, led the team in scoring in 2018-19 with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points. He has 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 60 games over his three seasons. Winikates has manned the blue line in 51 games over his career for Potsdam, while contributing four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. Forward Zweig has 19 points on seven goals and 12 assists over 68 contests as a Bear. Massena native and forward Young was second on the team in scoring last season with six goals and 14 assists for 20 points. He has 17 goals, 28 assists and 45 points in 67 career games.
