Buffalo State Men’s Hockey Scores Late, Ties Morrisville, 5-5
BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (1-1-2/1-1-2) scored in the closing minutes to secure a tie against Morrisville State (0-2-2/0-2-2) for the second-consecutive night, skating to a 5-5 draw in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Ice Arena.
Freshman defenseman Marcus Michalski (Woodstock, ON/St. Mary’s Catholic) scored his first collegiate goal with a point shot through traffic with just 1:54 remaining in regulation to force overtime and the eventual tie.
Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) had two goals and an assist to lead Buffalo State’s offense. Anthony Beaumont (Lester, PA/Interboro) and Nick Berst (Depew, NY/Lancaster) also scored for the Bengals.
Layne Martin had a goal and two assists, and John Doyle, Joe Santino, Matthew Beer, and MJ Maerkl also scored for Morrisville.
Goals were plentiful in the opening frame with each team trading goals back-and-forth before the Bengals took a 3-2 lead into the intermission. Salkeld scored his second of the game early in the second period to give Buffalo State a two-goal lead, but Morrisville erased the deficit to even it at 4-4 heading into the final frame. The Mustangs scored a third-consecutive goal to take their first lead midway through the third before the Bengals netted the late equalizer.
Ryan Demyen (Hubbard, OH/Hubbard), Ben Kramer (Great Neck, NY/Great Neck South), Brett Hope (Blenheim, ON/Blenheim) and Nick Melligan (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) all were credited with assists for Buffalo State.
Buffalo State had a 44-33 advantage in shots, as Mike DeLaVergne (Pawling, NY/Pawling) finished with 28 saves the Bengals. Both teams were efficient with the man-advantage as Morrisville was 3 for 4 on the power play, and Buffalo State was 3 for 8.
Buffalo State will make the trip to the North Country next weekend and will visit Plattsburgh on Friday at 7 p.m.
