BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sam Lafferty scored with 47 seconds remaining in the third period to break a 5-5 tie and lift Brown to a 7-5 victory over Colgate in the opening game of the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup Tuesday at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Nick Lappin tallied four goals and added two assists to power the Bears attack. Linemate Tommy Marchin chipped in three points, finishing with a goal and two assists.

Tyson Spink matched his career high with four points on two goals and two assists for the Raiders. Mike Panowyk pitched in a goal and an assist while Mike Borkowski and Evan Peterson also scored for Colgate.

Lafferty’s decisive tally in the final minute of regulation capped a wild non-conference game between the two ECAC Hockey rivals.

Mike Borkowski and Tyson Spink staked the Raiders to a 2-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest, only to see the Bears score three unanswered goals, including two during a four-minute span during the middle portion of the second period, to take its first lead of the game at 3-2.

Brown’s lead was short-lived, however, as a Mike Panowyk goal late in the second tied the game at 3-3.

Brown took the lead twice in the opening 10 minutes of the third, only to see the Raiders battle back to tie the game within three minutes of surrendering the go-ahead goal on both occasions.

Lafferty finally put the Bears ahead for good with his second goal of the season before Lappin capped his career night with an empty net goal to determine the final margin.

Tim Ernst made 13 saves in a relief effort of starter Tyler Steel to earn the win in goal for Brown. Charlie Finn turned aside 28 shots between the pipes for Colgate.

“We did some really good things offensively. I thought we had some really good looks during the course of the game.

“We’re just too porous in our own end right now. We had a couple of soft plays defensively which ended up in the back of our net. You can’t play soft anywhere, but especially in your own end.”
