Two members of the William Smith College ice hockey team garnered ECAC Women’s West weekly awards as announced by the conference office today. Sophomore Laurel Brown was tabbed the Goalie of the Week and first-year Maura Mulligan was named the Rookie of the Week.
William Smith (7-10-2) closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule last weekend with a pair of 4-1 victories over Division I independent Sacred Heart. It’s the first time the Herons have swept an opponent on the road as a varsity team. William Smith has now won three straight games, a program record, all by the score of 4-1. Sophomore Krista Federow registered a team-high five points (3g, 2a) on the weekend. Saturday’s win was the 10th win in program history.
Brown played solidly in goal for the Herons, collecting two wins over the weekend. She stopped 73 of the 75 shots she faced for a .973 save percentage. On Friday, she made 39 saves, including 13 in the third period to preserve the victory for the Herons. On Saturday, she stopped the first 34 shots she faced on her way to collecting her third straight victory. In her three-game win streak, Brown has a 1.00 goals against average and a .974 save percentage.
Mulligan earned league recognition for the second straight week after pocketing four points in two games against the Pioneers. On Friday, she assisted on the game’s first two goals, including Rebecca Begley’s game-winning power-play goal. In Saturday’s game, Mulligan added a goal and an assist. Her tally was the first goal of her collegiate career and came with the Herons on the power play. Since being moved to the first line against Plattsburgh, Mulligan is on a four-game point streak. She was on the honor roll last week.
The Herons will return to ECAC West play this weekend against Oswego. William Smith will travel to Oswego on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. faceoff. The next day the Lakers will make the return trip for a 4 p.m. game at the Cooler.
