TROY, N.Y. – Junior Tommy Marchin netted a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Brown University men’s hockey team to a 5-4 overtime victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Bears improve to 5-6-0 (4-6-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 3-10-3 (2-5-1 ECAC Hockey).
After netting the game’s first goal, Marchin (Algonac, MI/Muskegon Lumberjacks) helped bring the visitors back from a 4-1 deficit with under nine minutes to play in regulation. His goal at 11:07 of the third made it a 4-2 game. Assists went to Freshman Chris Burger (Buffalo, NY/Des Moines Buccaneers) and junior Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, NJ/Bloomington Thunder).
Marchin then brought Brown within 4-3 at 15:27, snapping home a shot from the left circle to complete the hat trick. Helpers went to senior Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, CT/Berkshire School) and freshman Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, WI/Green Bay Gamblers).
The Bears then tied the game with 3:27 to play on Berger’s first collegiate tally. After senior Sam Lafferty (Hollidayburg, PA/Deerfield Academy) had his shot from the high slot blocked, Berger picked the rebound out of a scrum and scored, knotting the game at 4-4.
Senior Tim Lappin (Saint Charles, IL/Wateroo Black Hawks) was then credited with the overtime winner, as his shot from the right wing boards deflected into the RPI net off the skate of a defender. Classmate Josh McArdle (Roscoe, FL/Nanaimo Clippers) and sophomore Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, NH/Islanders H.C.) earned the assists on Lappin’s second goal of the season, which came 1:35 into the extra frame.
RPI sophomore Jacob Hayhurst (Mississauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period, steering home a feed into the middle of the slot from freshman Emil Ohrvall (Halmstad, Sweden/Waterloo Black Hawks). Hayhurst found the top left corner of the net with his one-time finish, picking up his sixth goal of the year.
Sophomore blueliner Charlie Manley (Orchard Park, NY/Estevan Bruins) then gave RPI the lead (2-1) with his first tally of the season, ripping a shot from the blue line past Brown sophomore goaltender Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA/Fairbanks Ice Dogs). Classmate Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) found Manley at the point for the one-timer.
The Engineers made it a 3-1 game at 18:49 of the second, when freshman Billy Jerry (River Falls, WI/Madison Capitals) finished on the rush for his third goal of the year. Classmates Jon Richards (Callaway, MN/Austin Bruins) and Owen Stout (West Vancouver, BC/Coquitlam Express) earned the helpers.
A shorthanded goal by junior Evan Tironese (Qualicum Beach, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) gave the hosts a 4-1 advantage just 10 seconds into the third. Winning the period-opening draw back to senior Mike Prapavessis (Oakville, ON/Toronto Patriots), Tironese won a battle at the front of the net after Prapavessis’ dump in caromed off the end wall.
RPI freshman goaltender Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) finished with 25 saves, while Nieto had 25. The Engineers went 1 for 6 on the power play, with Brown finishing 1 for 4.
Aiding Marchin on offense was Berger, who had a goal and two assists. Gottlieb chipped in with a pair of helpers. Tironese had a goal and an assist for Rensselaer, while Prapavessis had two assists.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday night, when they host New Hampshire for a non-league game (7pm). Brown hosts Bentley on Wednesday (7pm).
