BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo State women’s hockey team put up a hard fight, but it wasn’t enough as the Bengals fell to the No. 3 in the country, Elmira, 2-1 in overtime this evening at the Buffalo State College Ice Arena.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 1, Elmira – 2
LOCATION: BSC Ice Arena – Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS: Buffalo State (4-2-1, 3-2-0), Elmira (5-0-0, 5-0-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams spent much of the first period feeling each other out. Elmira held an 8-3 advantage in shots but Buffalo State’s Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) turned aside all eight chances.
Elmira got on the board first, as Katie Granato found the back of the net 1:59 into the second period to give the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo State battled back in the third, as a quick play out of its own end turned into a 3-on-2 going the other way. Megan Reukauf (Depew/Lancaster) found Brooke Krantz (Penticton, BC/Penticton) streaking down the ice. As she crossed the blue line, Krantz dropped it off to Erin Gehen (West Seneca/West Seneca West), who from the front of the net flipped it back to the crashing Krantz at the side of the net who tipped it home to tie the game, 1-1.
Despite getting outshot 14-6 in the third, Buffalo State was able to keep the remainder of regulation scoreless to force overtime.
Sarah Hughson scored the game-winner for the Soaring Eagles halfway through the overtime period. She deflected a point shot into the back of the net to give Elmira the 2-1 win.
Silva finished the game with 30 stops for the Bengals.
FOR THE FOES
The tallies were Granato’s fourth and Hughson’s second of the season. Kyle Nelson made 18 saves in the victory.
