CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Buffalo St. women’s ice hockey team scored three consecutive goals after falling behind early in the game and skated to a 3-1 win versus Cortland Saturday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 5-14-2 overall and 4-9-2 in the conference, while the Bengals improved to 10-10-1 and 8-7.
Junior Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames) scored for Cortland with freshmen Jackie Richards (Lapeer, MI/Compuware) and Ally Miller (Potsdam/Potsdam H.S.) recording assists. Sophomore goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 30 saves.
Freshmen Christine Harris (Mountain Top, PA/New Jersey Rockets) and Erin Gehen (West Seneca/Cazenovia Chiefs) each tallied a goal and an assist for Buffalo St. Junior Nikki Kirchberger (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) netted a goal, and senior Jeyna Minnick (Rochester/Rochester Edge) and freshmen Caitie Horvatits (Elma/Buffalo Bisons) and Missy Mallon (Amherst/Cazenovia Chiefs) registered one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Justine Silva (El Monte, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) stopped 28 shots.
Temple gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 4:21 into the game with a spinning shot inside the left post from the slot. Gehen tied the game on the power play at 7:12, putting a shot in the top corner right after a faceoff win.
Harris made it a 2-1 game at 7:47 of the second period, converting a breakaway with a shot to the top right corner 13 seconds after a Cortland power play expired. Just before the midway point of the third period, Cortland had 1:54 of a two-player advantage on the power play but could not convert. Less than a minute after the Bengals returned to full strength, Kirchberger scored on a slap shot from the point at 10:27.
