Buffalo State Women’s Hockey Tops Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seniors Erin Gehen (West Seneca/Cazenovia Chiefs) and Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park/Oswego St.) were each involved in all three goals as the Buffalo St. women’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 3-1, Friday afternoon in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena.

Sophomore Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) scored her team-high sixth goal of the season for the Red Dragons (2-3-2, 1-3-1 NEWHL). Freshmen Katie DeVoe (Mississauga/Vaughan Flames) and Katelinn Cummings (Johnson City/Northwood School) each registered an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made her seventh straight start and turned aside 26 shots.

Gehen finished with two goals and one assist, while Lenard tallied one goal and two assists for the Bengals (3-4, 3-2). Senior Christine Harris (Mountain Top, PA/New Jersey Rockets) and sophomore Natasha Steinle (Morrison, CO/Canadien International Hockey Academy) collected one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Bri Gawronski (Dunkirk/Buffalo Bisons) registered 26 saves.

Gehen gave the Bengals the lead at 3:09 of the first period on a sharp-angled one-time shot from the right side. Lenard then scored on a deflection in front at 9:15 of the second period to make it a 2-0 game. Kolb cut Cortland’s deficit to 2-1 at 13:23 of the second with a quick shot deep in the slot on the left side.

In the third period, Cortland had a power play with just under five minutes remaining but could not capitalize. The Red Dragons pulled Farmer for an extra skater with 53 seconds remaining, but Gehen iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:19.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Cortland.
