GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart College (8-4-4) got off to a fast start en route to a 6-1 win over the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (6-10) on Saturday night. Nick Bingaman and Mac Olson each scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Statesmen, while sophomore defenseman Brad Campagna (Monroe, N.Y./New York Bobcats) scored his first collegiate goal for the Bears.
Bingaman put Hobart in front for good just 4:38 into the contest. The Statesmen created and sustained strong offensive pressure on Potsdam throughout the opening period. Hobart fired 22 shots on Bears senior goalie Shane Talarico (Greensburg, Pa./Elmira College) in the first period. He stopped 20. Olson netted the eventual game-winner at the 17:44 mark and the Statesmen took their two-goal advantage into the locker room. After Hobart killed off an early Potsdam power play in the second period, Bingaman struck for his second marker of the night on the man advantage at 6:02. Just 26 seconds later, Campagna got the Bears on the board with assists from junior forwards Trevor Cope(Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights) and Ken Simon(Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution). However, the Statesmen answered after just another 32 seconds for a 4-1 lead on a goal from Terrence O’Neill. After five more penalties in the middle of the period, Ian Coleman scored at 18:24 to give Hobart a commanding 5-1 advantage. Sophomore Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) replaced Talarico to start the final period. Olson scored his second of the contest at 12:55 to close the scoring at 6-1. The Statesmen outshot the Bears 9-7 in a fairly even third period. Talarico finished with 29 saves in the first 40 minutes to fall to 5-3 on the year. Keiser made eight saves on nine shots in the third period. Lino Chimienti finished with 26 saves to earn the win. Potsdam was 0-4 on the power play and Hobart went 1-4. The Bears return to Maxcy Ice Arena to resume SUNYAC playnext Friday when they host the third-ranked Plattsburgh State Cardinals at 7 p.m.
