Gravity''s Blast
Four intrepid and brave souls from Capital Edge Community Church took on the elements recently and ventured out into the pouring rain. Destination – Gibraltar Falls in Canberra’s Namadgi National Park. It had been raining all night which we knew was going to make our planned mountain outing interesting to say the least.
As soon as we parked the car we could hear the normally trickling creek, raging and thundering a hundred metres away. The climb down from the falls into the creek wasn’t too bad in the dark and wet. In fact, it was surprisingly grippy. Once in the creek below we immediately realised there was no way we could negotiate the waters, the force and volume of the water was just too great to risk crossing.
We took a few camera shots from safety on the bank then started to go our own ways to look for more risky, but potentially better spots. A bit of a climb around the western cliff face of the falls offered great opportunities.
The weather cleared up and filled the valleys and forests with beautiful golden morning light. As the sun climbed we finished up for the morning and dawdled on back to town for hash browns, muffins and a very welcome hot cup of coffee.
All this in Canberra’s back yard, not half an hour from the suburbs. We are so blessed to have this and much, much more surrounding the bush capital for our enjoyment!
