After leading the Canisius College hockey team to a sweep over conference foe AIC, senior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Nolan Sheeran (East Amherst, N.Y.) collected Atlantic Hockey weekly accolades, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Freeman was named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week after totaling four points, three goals and one assist in two games against the Yellow Jackets, including the game-winning tally in each game. Sheeran collected Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week accolades after a three-assist weekend in the sweep.
A native of Toronto, Freeman netted the game-winning goal in the third period in Friday’s 3-1 victory. He then followed it up by matching a career high with three points in Saturday’s win. After helping tie the game with an assist, Freeman netted two third-period goals to give Canisius a 3-1 advantage in the eventual 4-2 victory.
Freeman, who earned the weekly accolade for the first time in his career, leads the Griffs with seven points this season, netting three goals to go along with four assists. In 99 career games, the senior has totaled 56 points, 26 goals and 30 assists.
Sheeran continued his strong start to his collegiate career against AIC, picking up one assist in the opener and two third-period helpers in the finale. In five games this season, the rookie has totaled six points, one goal and five assists.
The East Amherst, N.Y. native is currently tied for 10th nationally with 1.00 assists per game and third in the country among rookies with 1.20 points per game.
Freeman, Sheeran and the Griffs now turn their focus toward opening their new facility at HARBORCENTER. The team begins play at the new downtown facility on Friday and Saturday against Ohio State with both games slated to begin at 7:35 p.m.
