BY RANDY SCHULTZ—AMHERT, NY – Emma Faso scored a natural hat trick and assisted on the game-winning goal by Charleigh Rondeau, as Clarence/Amherst/Sweet Home (CASH) defeated Kenmore/Grand Island (KGI) in double overtime, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the WNYGVIHF playoffs at the Northtown Center Tuesday night. It was the second game of the night of a three-game quarterfinal to determine a Girls High School Ice Hockey champion.
KGI got off to a fast start, scoring just 76 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal by Kaylynn Savoy. KGI increased their lead to 2-0 early in the second period on a goal by Abigail Blair with Savoy assisting.
Three minutes later CASH’s Jamie King cut the KGI lead in half, 2-1, with Madison Achtyl assisting. KGI increased their lead by two again at the 12:56 mark of the second period when Carissa Buyea scored to make it, 3-1. Nina Stockman and Rosie Boyko assisted on the power play goal.
But with just 22 seconds left in the period, CASH cut the KGI lead to 3-2 on Faso’s first goal of the night.
Just six seconds into the third period Faso tallied another unassisted goal to tie the game, 3-3. Faso scored again 6:30 later to give CASH a 4-3 lead. McKenna Home and Buyea assisted.
With :30 remaining Blair scored her second goal of the game to tie the score, 4-4. Savoy and Rosie Boyko assisted.
Following a scoreless first overtime period, Rondeau scored the game winner for CASH at 3:26.
CASH outshot KGI for the game, 48-25. Goalie Ellie Simmons stopped 43 of 48 shots in a losing effort for KGI.
