Several of the Golden Knights standouts played key roles in helping the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team gain a measure of revenge over the University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. Senior Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) made 16 saves, junior Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) tallied four points and junior Rhyen McGill (Whitby, ONT) scored twice on the power play as Clarkson defeated the Catamounts 4-0 after suffering a 3-2 loss in Burlington on Friday.
Ranked third in the national polls, Clarkson improves to 11-2-1 overall. The Knights, with a 3-1 ECAC Hockey mark, resume conference action next weekend, hosting Quinnipiac and Princeton.
Tiley, who leads the nation in whitewashes with her sixth of the season, becomes the Green and Gold’s all-time leader in career shutouts with 30, breaking the old mark of 29 held by Erica Howe ’14.
Clarkson outshot Vermont (5-7-1), putting a season-high 50 shots on the Catamounts net, while only allowing the visitors 16. Specialty teams’ play was near perfect for the Knights, who went 3-of-6 on the power play while killing off all three of Vermont’s man-advantage chances.
The Knights dominated the first period against the Catamounts, outshooting the visitors 15-7 in the stanza, put could not convert on their chances, Clarkson suffered a loss when leading scorer, freshman Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) left the game just 1:34 in and did not return after falling awkwardly into the boards.
Clarkson put another 17 shots on the Catamounts in the middle frame and scored on two of them to take the lead. McGill started things off early in the second, knocking in a rebound off Gabel’s shot at 2:27. Senior defenseman Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) also assisted. At 15:15 sophomore Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice Czech Rep.) connected on the power play for her third goal of the weekend and 10th of the season. Harmon, with her 92nd career point (25-67) and Gabel assisted.
The Knights continued to roll in the final period, adding two more goals on 16 shots. While on the power play, Pejzlova picked up a rebound off a shot by Gabel and fed a pass into the slot where McGill fired in her second goal of the day and fifth on the year at 8:04.
Gabel closed out the scoring with her team-high 12th goal of the season and 95th career point (52-43) at 13:02 with juniors Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ONT) and Emma Keenan (Calgary, ALB) assisting.
