Biddeford, ME – Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) scored her third goal of the season but the SUNY Canton women’s hockey team dropped a 5-1 contest to open a weekend series on the road at the University of New England on Friday night.
The Nor’easters (4-4-1) opened the scoring at 14:23 of the opening period as Marissa Clifford-Biederman netted her fourth of the season with the skater advantage. UNE led 1-0 after one.
The hosts added a pair of goals in the second period from Emily Corrales and Gabby Crugnale to open up a 3-0 advantage after 40 minutes of play.
UNE added an insurance marker on Mary Wirth’s third of the year at 7:21 in the final period.
The Roos (4-6-1) got on the board at the 11:23 mark of the final frame. Mariah McCue (Belleville, ON) ripped a shot from the point and Coad was in the right spot to put home the rebound to get the Roos within 4-1. Less than a minute later the Nor’easters responded to regain the four goal advantage.
Illie Berisha (Lake Ariel, PA) made 27 saves in net for SUNY Canton, while Sydney Helmbrecht turned aside 28 shots for the Nor’easters.
