HAMILTON – The No. 17 Colgate men’s ice hockey team scored two extra-attacker goals in the final minute of the third period to tie the game but the Quinnipiac Bobcats scored the game-winning goal 22 seconds into overtime to hand the Raiders a 4-3 loss at Class of 1965 Arena.
Trailing by two goals, the Raiders pulled goaltender Zac Hamilton (Ottawa, Ontario) for an extra skater during a four-on-four opportunity with less than a minute to go in the third period. The decision paid off as Jared Cockrell (Readfield, Maine) fired a shot off Andrew Shortridge’s pad and the rebound kicked out perfectly to Nick Austin (St. Louis Park, Minnesota) in the right faceoff circle. Austin corralled the puck and wristed the shot top shelf past a sprawling Shortridge to bring Colgate within a goal with 48.3 seconds left.
Adam Dauda (Kitchener, Ontario) scored the game-tying extra-attacker goal 26 seconds later on his second of the game to tie it, 3-3. With Hamilton pulled once again, Mike Panowyk (Whitby, Ontario) chased down Trevor Cosgrove’s (Exeter, New Hampshire) shot that ricocheted off the end boards. He missed the one-timer but the puck kicked off his skate to Dauda who fired the puck just past Shortridge who had been in position for Panowyk’s shot.
Quinnipiac managed to score the game-winning goal 22 seconds into the overtime period as Bo Pieper tipped home Brogan Rafferty’s turnaround shot from the left point just past Hamilton’s outstretched right pad.
Dauda got the Raiders on the board initially with 5:22 to play in the first period to give Colgate a 1-0 lead. Jacob Panetta (Belleville, Ontario) played a pass from Austin to Dauda who found open space on the left wing. Dauda blasted a shot from the left faceoff circle that clanged off the post and off Shortridge’s back into the goal.
The Bobcats scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period to take a 3-1 lead before the Raiders last-minute comeback. Odeen Tufto tied the game 45 seconds into the second period before Alex Whelan scored a pair of goals just 3:12 apart from each other to give Quinnipiac the two-goal lead.

“It was a slow start like we might expect out of a break but we still took a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first. Our second period was not good at all. Looking back at it, we were just a step behind and weren’t willing to pay the price, especially defensively. We still had some opportunities but they didn’t go for us.”
“We found a way to battle back. I was really proud of our effort at the end to score those two goals before that heartbreaker. We gave them too much ice at the middle of the rink and how they entered the zone before finding a way to get it through.”
“We didn’t let up and our team never does. We keep battling until the end and we did that tonight. I wish we could have got a little something out of it ultimately. It was disappointing how it ended but we had some good fight in us.”
