HAMILTON – Colgate Men’s Hockey Head Coach Don Vaughan announced Monday the addition of Juliano Pagliero to his staff as an assistant coach.
Pagliero will work primarily with the Raiders goaltenders and defensemen. He will also oversee the program’s recruiting efforts while assisting in the day-to-day operations of the team.
“We are excited to welcome Juliano Pagliero and his wife, Kristin, to the Colgate Hockey program,” said Vaughan. “Juliano was chosen from a strong applicant pool and comes highly recommended. He has an excellent reputation as a tireless recruiter and has a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed both on the ice and in the classroom.
“As a former Division I goalie, he has a wealth of knowledge of that position, which will serve him and our hockey program well moving forward. “
Pagliero comes to Colgate after two seasons as an assistant coach at Holy Cross. While with the Crusaders, He was responsible for recruiting a freshman class that led the 2014-15 squad in scoring by class and also helped Holy Cross land a highly-touted incoming class for the 2015-16 campaign.
On the ice, Pagliero played a key role in the development of Crusader goaltender Matt Ginn, who finished his career as the program’s career leader in saves (3,857), save percentage (.917), shutouts (8), minutes (7760:46) and games played (129) by a goaltender. An All-Atlantic Hockey First-Team selection in 2014-15, Ginn was also a nominee for the Mike Richter Award after establishing school marks for save percentage (.931), shutouts (4) and goals against average (2.10) during his senior campaign.
A native of Dalroy, Albt., Pagliero is no stranger to the Central New York hockey scene, having begun his coaching career with a two-year stint as an assistant at nearby Utica College. In 2012-13, Utica advanced to the NCAA Semifinals and won the ECAC West regular-season championship. Pagliero left his mark during his time with the Pioneers, recruiting First-Team All-American and ECAC West Player of the Year, Louie Educate, and coaching goaltender Nick Therrien, the ECAC West second team All-Star and the goalie with the most regular-season wins in all of Division III for the 2012-13 season.
Pagliero graduated in 2010 from Niagara University and was a four-year member of the Purple Eagles program. The College Hockey America (CHA) Player-of-the-Year as a senior, he finished his career as a three-time all-conference selection. With Pagliero in goal, the Purple Eagles won back-to-back CHA regular-season titles (2006 & 2007) and reached the NCAA tournament in 2008 after capturing the CHA championship crown. He was awarded the prestigious Niagara University Purple Heart award in 2009 as a senior.
Pagliero participated in the Ottawa Senators development camp following his junior season and took part in the Chicago Blackhawks development camp after his senior campaign. Following his collegiate career, he went on to play in the Italian first division for Alleghe HC. He also played for the CHL’s Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees during the 2010-2011 season.
“I am very excited and honored to be joining the Colgate Men’s Hockey staff,” said Pagliero. “I look forward to working with such a respected coach like Coach Vaughan, as well as Coach Harder and the players as we try to build on the success that the program has enjoyed in recent years. I can’t wait to join the staff and start building towards the future.”
