HAMILTON – No. 5 Colgate women’s ice hockey notched a long-awaited victory over Princeton with a 2-0 ECAC Hockey triumph at the Class of 1965 Arena Friday night.
Shelby Perry (Elginburg, Ontario) scored her first goal of the season in the opening period and Malia Schneider (Millarville, Alberta) continued her hot start with her seventh tally early in the second to account for the Colgate scoring.
The Raider defense clamped down on Princeton to record its fourth shutout of the young season. Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ontario) recorded a season-high 29 saves to improve to 3-0-0.
No one on the Raiders roster had tasted victory over the Tigers. Princeton rode in on a six-game winning streak in the series, including scores last year by counts of 7-2 and 5-1. Colgate’s most recent win in the series was back in February 2014 by a 1-0 result.
The Raiders improved to 7-0-0 at home this season and also rebounded from their only loss of the season last Saturday at No. 7/8 St. Lawrence. Colgate improved to 8-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECAC Hockey.

• Perry found the net for the first time this season when she poked one home at 12:20 of the first period. Assists went to Shae Labbe and Lauren Wildfang.
• Schneider scored for the fourth consecutive game and upper her points streak to eight games with a goal 2:54 into the second period. Assists went to Wildfang and Shelby Wood.

• Wood’s assist was her first point of her collegiate career.
• Princeton was shut out for the first time this season. The Tigers were coming off an 8-1 win over Dartmouth in their most recent game last Saturday in New Jersey.
• Schneider improved her season point total to 10 and trails team leader Jessie Eldridge (11) by one while recording her eighth straight game with a point.
• Wildfang moved into second place on the team in assists with seven. Tonight was her 13th career multipoint game and now has six assists in the past three games.
• Labbe’s helper was her fourth assist of the season.
• Vandyk lowered her goals-against average to 1.33 and raised her save percentage to .950.
• The victory was Vandyk’s third of the season and 34th of her career, tying the junior for second on Colgate’s all-time wins list. She’s now just one win behind the record of 35 wins set by Rebecca Lahar (2002-05).
• Colgate is now tied with No. 4/4 Ohio State for second in the nation with four shutouts, only trailing Clarkson’s five.

Both teams had their moments and fortunately we were able to find one early there in the first and rode that wave. Their goalie played exceptionally, as did ours, and it was a good back and forth game.”
(On goals from Perry and Schneider) “It was nice to see Shelby get on the board. She would agree that it’s nice to have that first one behind her this year, although she’s been playing really well. And then for Schneids, she kind of picked up where she left off. She’s dangerous around the net and she’s making plays out there. She’s off to a good start.”
