Five different players scored goals, with Sammy Smigliani, Rosy Demers and Kaitlyn O’Donohoe recording a goal and an assist, to lead the fifth-ranked Colgate women’s hockey team to a 5-0 win over St. Lawrence in an ECAC Hockey contest at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, New York on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders scored two goals in the first two minutes and 44 seconds of the game and never looked back, holding 3-0 and 5-0 leads at the first and second intermissions, respectively.
“Colgate did a really nice job of delivering on their chances tonight and deserved the win,” said Saints’ assistant coach Mare MacDougall Bari. “But we are most certainly proud of the way our team played hard, stuck together and competed until the final buzzer.”
Malia Schneider gave Colgate a 1-0 lead at the 1:28 mark, lifting a wrist shot top shelf from just inside the right faceoff dot. Just 76 seconds later, Darcie Lappan tipped a shot by Maggie MacEachern from the top of the left circle just in front of the net past St. Lawrence goaltender Lucy Morgan to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
The Saints had an opportunity to cut into the lead when Serdachny was whistled for a five-minute major, and then had a full two minutes of a 5-on-3 power play when Nemo Neubauerova was called for cross checking, but the Raiders were able to kill off the advantage.
O’Donohoe made it 3-0 Colgate with a power play goal with 1:22 remaining in the first period, finishing a tic-tac-toe passing play that Allyson Simpson started at the blue line, feeding Demers at the right side of the net. Demers slid the puck across the crease to O’Donohoe, who had a wide open net.
Smigliani scored on her own rebound five minutes into the second period to increase the Raiders’ lead to four goals, and Demers capped the scoring on a long rush down the right wing, finishing with a forehand to the top left corner with 8:50 remaining in the second period.
Colgate was 1-for-3 on the power play and held the Saints scoreless on four power play opportunities. The Raiders held a 34-25 advantage in shots on goal.
Peri Donaldson earned the win in goal for the Raiders, getting the start on the Raiders’ senior day and leaving with a 2-0 lead. Kayle Osborne played the bulk of the game, stopping 23 shots, while Donaldson, who came back into the game for the final 2:39, finished with two saves.
Morgan made 17 saves for St. Lawrence, while Jaimie Rainville played the third period, stopping all 12 shots she faced.
The Saints, now 2-6-0 overall and 2-5-0 in ECAC Hockey play, will hope to make up games against Clarkson next week. Any schedule updates will be announced on www.saintsathletics.com as soon as they are finalized.
