HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior co-captain Mike Panowyk (Whitby, Ontario) scored two goals for the Colgate men’s ice hockey team Saturday night as the Raiders downed the No. 11/12 Quinnipiac Bobcats, 4-1, at the newly named Frank Perrotti, Jr. Arena to complete a three-point weekend.

Following Friday night’s scoreless tie, the Raiders exploded for four goals in a game for the first time since scoring five in the season-opening win over Niagara.

Panowyk’s two-goal game was the first multi-goal game of his career as he helped cap off the Raiders victory over the Bobcats.

Adam Dauda (Kitchener, Ontario) tallied a power-play goal along with an assist for his seventh career two-point game while John Snodgrass (Eagan, Minnesota) was credited with the game-winning goal to lead the Raiders.

Goaltender Colton Point (North Bay, Ontario) continues impress between the pipes for the Raiders as he tallied 33 saves in the w31889inning effort to remain unbeaten through his first eight starts of the season (4-0-4). Point totaled 75 saves for the Raiders on the weekend to lead all of ECAC Hockey and finish second in the nation.

Dauda got the Raiders on the board just over midway through the first period with his second goal of the season. Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta). McMann whiffed on a shot but
maintained control of the puck and took a second shot that was saved by Quinnipiac goaltender Andrew Shortridge. The rebound squeaked just past Shortridge where Dauda was waiting to swipe the puck into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Raiders doubled their lead just 1:26 later as Snodgrass found the back of the net for the first time this season. Dauda collected a loose puck and skated along the left boards into the offensive zone where he worked the puck to Snodgrass who deked Shortridge for the goal.

Quinnipiac got a goal back early in the second period was Karlis Cukste collected a Colgate clear attempt at the left point and rifled a shot through traffic that Point could not see.

Both teams skated the remainder of the period in an even battle before Panowyk regained momentum for the Raiders with 0.3 seconds left in the second period. After blocking a Nick Jermain shot, Panowyk turned on the jets and skated the puck down the ice before beating Shortridge for the goal.

Point continued turn away Quinnipiac shots and Colgate managed to kill off a penalty where the Bobcats pulled Shortridge for a six-on-four advantage with 7:34 left in the third period.

Panowyk put the exclamation point on the Raiders win with 3:41 left in the third period. Trevor Cosgrove (Exeter, New Hampshire) started the play behind the Raiders goal and hit Josh McKechney (Calgary, Alberta) with a swift pass on the right side. Panowyk snuck in behind the Bobcats defense and McKechney threaded the needle with a long pass where he made one move and beat Shortridge low, blocker side.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan
“For a young team, to come out of their with a win on the road in this building against a team that we haven’t had a lot of success against recently gives our guys a little bit more confidence. We’re starting to see the process come together, we work so hard in practice and then to see it pull together on the weekend is a great thing. We still have a long way to go but we’re going to keep working at it.”

“We made a couple of good defensive plays, both of Pano’s goals were started deep in our own end on a blocked shot and another good play along the wall. We’ve played solidly in front of Colton, we’ve given up some shorts and that’s a result of being young but tonight we played better in front of him. A lot of our offense starts in our own zone so we’re starting to see more of that as well.”

“[Pano] and Petey have done a great job, they’ve been really good leaders and managed a lot of things on their own. They’re taking charge, which is what you want your leaders to do and taking responsibility for the group. On top of that, they’re two of our hardest working guys.”

“I was happy for Pano tonight to get a couple, clearly the one with 0.3 seconds left was a huge goal for us. It’s funny, the guys on the bench were yelling to shoot because they knew the clock was winding down while Hards and I were watching the clock telling him to keep skating because he had enough time. He had just enough time, and it was a great goal.”

Co-captain Mike Panowyk
“They were counting down for me but at that point they were just numbers. I didn’t know, I just wanted to get in that slot area and let a quick shot go. Thankfully, there was enough time on the clock.”

“We’re building something special here, a lot of people underestimated us at the start of the year picking us to finish last. We have a chip on our shoulder, we’re going to come at you every single game because we know we have a good group in there and we believe in ourselves. That’s all we need and we’ll just roll from there.”

“He’s been unbelievable, he’s really special. Every night he gives us a chance to win with big saves and small saves, he’s there all the time and we have complete trust in him. It helps our defensemen and our forwards to have more trust in our game, more trust in our goaltender to be able to play our game and have a good stop back there.”
