Jenny Blake & Rachel Develin with their works Autumn Sunset and A Cog in the Wheel of Media

ABC 666’s Genevieve Jacobs opened Canberra sculptor Rachel Develin and painter Jenny Blake’s com.pulsive art exhibition at The Q with all the pizazz and candid insight we’ve come to enjoy from her. With a shared working history in the media/communications industry with very different outcomes, powerhouses Develin and Blake have joined forces to present their latest works.
Blake’s paintings, mostly favouring deep reds, golds, ochres and blacks has gone from strength to strength during her artist’s career. There’s a quiet power blended with a feminine softness that makes her work engaging. Autumn Sunset, Harvest and Earthquake are standouts.
Develin’s truly unique sculptures are created mainly from discarded media materials (flower petals from CDs, leaves from film negative strips) that have been edited to the extreme, rearranged with other collected objects (pharmacy bottles, mistletoe, copper wire) and combined with tongue-in-cheek titles.
Both self-confessed ‘overcommitters’ have threaded elements of their diverse careers (mostly in media) into the pieces in this outstanding exhibition.
