GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team was defeated by eighth ranked Connecticut College 5-1 in a non-conference game at The Cooler this evening. The Camels Lauren Helm scored twice to lead all skaters.
The Herons (3-7-1) opened the scoring at 8:09 of the first period when junior Kiley Fewster notched her first goal of the season. With Connecticut College on the power play, she broke up a crossing pass and raced the length of the rink and wristed a shot from the slot over the Camel’s goalie’s glove hand. It was Fewster’s third career short-handed goal.
Connecticut College (5-2-0) tied the game at 1-1 when Helm pocketed her first goal of the game. The power-play goal was assisted by Paige Michel and Cassie Hunter. Three Minutes later Kyla Floresca scored to give the Camels a 2-1 lead headed into the first intermission. With Connecticut College on the power play, Floresca stationed herself in front of the William Smith goal and deflected a Julie Beattie shot past Maggie Salmon. It was the first of three assists on the night for Beattie.
Ashley Anctil gave the Camels a two goal lead at 16:42 of the second period. Anctil slapped a one-timer from the low slot past Salmon. It was Connecticut College’s third power-play goal of the game. Floresca and Beattie were credited with assists on the goal.
Erin Healy’s first goal of the season at 11:46 of the third period was the game’s first even strength goal. Beattie recorded an assist on the goal. Helm added an empty-net goal with 33 seconds left to close out the scoring.
Maggie Salmon played 58:30 in goal for the Herons, making 41 stops. At the other end of the ice Katherine Chester made 30 saves on her way to collecting her fifth victory of the season.
The Camels made the most of their power play opportunities, going 3-for-7 with the extra skater. William Smith came away empty on its six opportunities.
The Herons and Connecticut College will meet again tomorrow at The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
