In less than half a minute, Cornell’s game against Colgate went from a tied contest to a blowout.
Cornell got three goals in a 26-second span of the first period, taking a 3-0 lead that it would eventually balloon into a 6-0 lead late in the frame. When the contest finally concluded, Cornell came away with a 9-2 victory at Starr Rink on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Red (8-1-0, 6-0 ECAC Hockey), which defeated the Raiders (3-9-1, 0-5-1) by a 9-0 margin on Friday at Lynah Rink, remains undefeated in league play and combined for 18 goals over the weekend. The 18 goals was the team’s highest two-game total since putting up nine each against Brown and Syracuse on Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, 2011.
On Saturday, Brianne Jenner scored three points on two goals and an assist, bringing her weekend total to nine. Also with multi-goal games were Taylor Woods and Monika Leck. Jess Brown, Jessica Campbell and Jillian Saulnier also had multi-point nights.
Though she did allow a goal for the first time in her career, sophomore Katelyn Pippy earned her third consecutive win and made 16 saves.
The Big Red is 6-0 in league play for the second time in three years and now has nine straight wins against Colgate. Cornell has scored at least one goal in 91 consecutive contests, and that streak continued very early on Saturday.
Freshman Victoria Pittens scored her first career goal at the 6:52 mark of the first period, and she was followed by Brown breaking out for a goal just 17 seconds later. Nine seconds after that, Campbell made it 3-0 on a pass from Hayleigh Cudmore, and that effectively ended the Raiders’ chances of coming back.
After five more minutes, Woods scored her fifth career goal and her second short-handed goal of the season. Jenner earned her first tally of the day at the 17:16 mark on a pass from Brown, and Leck made it 6-0 on just 15 seconds later thanks to passes from Woods and Campbell.
Colgate got its goal with 57 seconds remaining in the period, but Jenner notched her second of the afternoon 14 minutes into the second period to regain the six-goal lead at 7-1. Leck got her second goal four minutes after that, knocking in a pass from Kelly Murray. Saturday was the sophomore’s first two-goal contest since Feb. 4 against Union.
Woods earn her second goal of the game – and her second two-goal game of the weekend – in the third period. On the power play, Woods finished off a sequence of passes from Jenner and Jillian Saulnier to make it 9-1.
Colgate put a short-handed goal past Pippy with three minutes left in the contest to end the scoring.
Cornell returns to action next week when it travels to No. 6 Harvard and Dartmouth. The Big Red and Big Green play Friday night at 7 p.m., and Cornell faces the Crimson on Saturday at 4 p.m.
