NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The women’s hockey team secured another dominating outing this weekend as it topped Yale 3-0 at Ingalls Rink on Saturday afternoon. Marlene Boissonnault anchored Cornell’s defensive efforts as the goaltender earned her first shutout of the season after turning away all 15 of the Bulldogs’ shots on goal.
The victory extends the team’s undefeated streak against Yale as the Bulldogs last beat the Big Red on Jan. 23, 2009.
Following a scoreless first period, Kristin O’Neill opened up the scoring as she punched in a puck right in front of the crease at 8:44 of the second period following a blocked shot by Sarah Knee to earn her third goal this year. The sophomore captain is currently on a four-game point streak after recording assists in the past three tilts.
Diana Buckley added in another on a power play about five minutes later to make it 2-0 in the Big Red’s favor. Yale’s sixth-ranked penalty kill unit (89.1%) had no chance, as Buckley sent in a rocket from the back of the far circle after Lenka Serdar gave her the feed. The goal was Buckley’s second of the weekend while Serdar’s assist marked her first point of the season.
Maddie Mills continues to roll this year as she recorded the third and final goal of the afternoon for Cornell. Mills took advantage of a rebound to light the lamp early in the third frame. The freshman leads the squad with six goals and extends her goal streak to five consecutive games.
The Big Red’s fourth-ranked penalty kill unit was in full force, killing all three power play opportunities that Yale had, despite the Bulldogs touting the 10th-best power play squad in the nation.
Overall, Cornell’s offense was relentless, peppering the net with 33 shots while Yale only mustered 15.
The team has a short turnaround as Penn State visits Lynah Rink this Tuesday, Nov. 21, for a 3 p.m. start time.
