#4/5 Cornell Men’s Hockey Blasts Princeton, 7-1
ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior forward Anthony Angello scored twice and six other players scored to help the Cornell men’s hockey team enjoy its best offensive output in nearly 10 years on Friday night in a resounding 7-1 victory over Princeton at Lynah Rink.
Cornell (12-2, 6-1 ECAC Hockey, 4-0 Ivy League) scored three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 24 seconds in the second period after the lone tally from Princeton (6-8-3, 3-6-1, 2-4) to break the game open. Freshman Brenden Locke’s line accounted for eight points on the night – three from Locke’s assists, two from Angello goals, and a goal and an assist from junior Mitch Vanderlaan.
The offensive outburst marks the first time Cornell has potted seven in a game since Feb. 16, 2008, when it defeated Rensselaer by an identical 7-1 score. With this effort coming on the heels of a 6-2 win over Canisius last Saturday, the Big Red has 13 goals over a two-game span for the first time since Oct. 29-30, 2004 (via 7-1 victories over Army and Sacred Heart).
Angello opened the scoring inside the game’s 5-minute mark, and Cornell – ranked fourth in the nation in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and fifth in the USCHO.com poll – had several other opportunities to extend the lead before the intermission. Reigning ECAC Hockey goaltender of the week Ryan Ferland made 15 stops in the first to keep Princeton in it.
Though Yanni Kaldis’ unassisted power-play goal early in the second doubled the Cornell lead, that strike was quickly negated 71 seconds later. Two minor penalties called simultaneously on Cornell gave Princeton a lengthy two-man advantage, of which it only needed 36 seconds to convert David Hallisey’s sixth power-play goal of the season. The Big Red was able to kill off the subsequent five-on-four, and rocked back from its heels after a few more minutes.
Rauter’s highlight-reel goal, a chip shot over Ferland’s blocker and he lunged to the ice in the slot, restored Cornell’s lead. Freshman forward Cam Donaldson then scored his first collegiate goal on a breakaway exactly two minutes later, and Angello’s second of the night off a rebound of a blocked shot from junior defenseman Matt Nuttle opened the flood gates. Vanderlaan and sophomore forward Jeff Malott capped the scoring with third-period goals.
Senior Hayden Stewart made 21 saves to earn the victory in his third consecutive start in goal, even adding his first assist on Donaldson’s goal.
Cornell returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday, when it hosts Quinnipiac at Lynah Rink.
