ITHACA, N.Y. — Four members of the men’s hockey team garnered All-Ivy League honors, the league announced Thursday, led by a first-team selection for freshman defenseman Yanni Kaldis. Senior goalie Mitch Gillam, senior defenseman Patrick McCarron and sophomore forward Mitch Vanderlaan were all placed on the All-Ivy second team, giving the Big Red four All-Ivy selections for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

Kaldis was immediately installed as a top-four defenseman for the Big Red, where he logs a lot of ice time and plays at the point of one of the power-play units. He had eight assists among his 10 Ivy League games this season, which was tied for the most among any of the league’s blueliners. He had three helpers in one game, setting up each of the Big Red’s goals Nov. 5 at Harvard. The effort made him the first Big Red player to record three power-play assists in a single game since Byron Bitz on Jan. 7, 2006.

Gillam earned his second career All-Ivy League honor, having also been placed on the second team at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. This is his third season at the Big Red’s starting goaltender, where he ranked second among the Ancient Eight primary goaltenders in goals against average (2.38) and save percentage (.918).

McCarron earned his first career All-Ivy accolade with six assists in Ivy League games, which rank tied for third-most among defensemen. Serving as one of the Big Red’s alternate captains, he has been one of Cornell’s top scorers all season while being a linchpin of the defense in all scenarios.

This is also Vanderlaan’s first appearance on the All-Ivy League teams, after he was tied for the most goals in Ivy League play with eight. He has been the Big Red’s leading scorer for the majority of the season, with three of his game-winners coming against Ancient Eight opponents.
