ITHACA, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey has announced that Cornell has swept January’s monthly awards from the league. Junior forward Anthony Angello has been named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Month, while freshman Matthew Galajda has garnered both Rookie of the Month and Goaltender of the Month honors.
Angello was the nation’s top goal-scorer in January, potting nine goals – including seven over the last five games alone. He also led the nation over that span in game-winning goals (4) and rating (plus-10). Additionally, Angello led ECAC Hockey with 11 points over the month, and had the circuit’s only hat trick last Friday at Harvard. He earned his first career ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honor a few days ago.
Galajda led the nation in January for all of goaltenders’ major statistical categories, including goals against average (0.71), save percentage (.973) and shutouts (4). He was also tied for the national lead with six victories, backstopping the Big Red through an undefeated month (7-0-1). Galajda post three consecutive shutouts, with a shutout streak that topped out at 227 minutes, 11 seconds. It was the second-longest such streak in Big Red program history and 13th all-time on the NCAA Division I list. He also broke the Cornell single-season record for shutouts by a freshman goalie, with his six clean sheets now tied for the national lead.
Having ascended to the No. 1 ranking in both the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls for the first time since March 28, 2003, Cornell (18-2-1, 12-1-1 ECAC Hockey) takes its 10-game unbeaten streak into a game at 7 p.m. tonight against Union at Lynah Rink. The Big Red then hosts Rensselaer at 7 p.m. Saturday. As of 11 a.m. Friday, there were fewer than 200 tickets remaining for either game. While supplies last, tickets can be purchased at www.cornellbigredtickets.com.
