Anna Daniels scored a power-play goal early in the second period and the goal held up as the Castleton St. women’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 1-0, in the season-opening game for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Oswego State Classic.
Sophomore goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 43 shots for the Red Dragons. Goalie Paula Stephens stopped all 21 shots she faced for the Spartans. Nicoline Jensen assisted on Castleton’s goal.
After a scoreless first period, Jensen set up Daniels’ game-winner at the four minute, 12 second mark of the second period.
The Red Dragons return to action on Sunday when they face New England College at noon during day two of the Oswego State Classic.
