MILTON, MASS. – Three different players scored goals as the Curry College men’s hockey team defeated Cortland, 3-2, in non-conference action Saturday night. The Red Dragons fell to 4-5-3 with the setback, their first non-conference loss of the season. The Colonels improved to 2-7-2.
Junior Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) and freshman Shane Bennett (Grand Island/Halton Ravens) scored goals for Cortland. Sophomores Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders), Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Kollyn Jones (Cazenovia/New York PAL Islanders) and freshman Zach Felser (Sylvania, OH/Philadelphia Little Flyers) each recorded an assist. Jones made 23 saves in his first start of the season in goal.
Joe Scarfo, Adam Valadao and Shane Harrington netted goals for Curry. Hector Majul, Zachery White, Mack Heisinger, Phil Kiss and Jake Heisinger collected one assist apiece. Goalie Brett Sinclair registered 34 saves.
Scarfo gave the Colonels a 1-0 lead at 16:39 of the opening period. Valadao made it a 2-0 game just 1:25 into the second period before Garrison’s power-play goal at 14:01 of the period pulled Cortland to within 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Harrington tallied a power-play goal at 4:53 of the third period, and the Colonels led, 3-1. Bennett cut the Curry lead to 3-2 with his team-high sixth goal of the season at 11:18. The Red Dragons pulled Jones for an extra skater with one minute to play but could not score the equalizer.
