Cortland Rallies To Beat Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland men’s hockey team scored four goals in the first 6:03 of the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and earned a 6-3 victory at Canton Saturday night in non-conference action. The Red Dragons evened their record at 9-9-3, while the Kangaroos fell to 7-14-1.

Senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) paced Cortland’s offense with a pair of goals. Freshman Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) tallied a game-high three points on one goal and two assists, sophomore Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) and freshman Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) each contributed one goal and one assist, senior Jeff Vanzant (Barrie, ON/Peterborough Liftlock Stars) netted a goal and four others recorded one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) made 30 saves.

Dave Schneider scored two goals for Canton. George Curry tallied one goal and one assist, while four others registered one assist each. Goalie Luis Puig made 17 saves in 46:03 before giving way to Christopher Marsillo, who stopped five shots over the final 13:57.

After a scoreless first period, the Kangaroos took a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.Garrison gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 31 seconds into the second period, but Schneider netted back-to-back goals for the 2-1 advantage. The Red Dragons exploded for four quick goals to open the third period, chasing Puig. Nolan, Vanzant, Zappia and McCann each lit the lamp. Curry’s power-play goal at 8:57 pulled Canton to within 5-3, but Zappia iced the game with a short-handed goal at 15:15 for the 6-3 final.
