Cortland Rallies To Tie Potsdam In Men’s Hockey

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberdeen Wings) scored the game-tying goal with less than six minutes remaining in regulation as the Cortland men’s hockey team came back from a 3-1 third-period deficit to earn a 3-3 overtime tie at Potsdam Friday night in SUNYAC action.

Sophomore Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) paced the Red Dragons (7-9-4, 1-7-3 SUNYAC) with one goal and two assists. Sophomore Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) also netted a goal along with Wagner, sophomore Dray Zack (Rensselaer/Connecticut Oilers) recorded two assists and junior Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) chipped in with one assist. Sophomore goalie Drew Weigman (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 33 saves.

Jake Rivera led the Bears (10-7-4, 6-4-2) with two goals and one assist. Dylan Vander Esch tallied a goal, and Jake Butler, Nick Casacci and Billy Pascalli each contributed an assist. Goalie Brendan McMenimen stopped 26 shots.

Rivera gave Potsdam the lead at 7:04 of the first period with an unassisted goal and made it a 2-0 game on the power play with a one timer from the right circle at 16:22 of the period.

Broderick cut the lead to 2-1 at 6:44 of the second period before Vander Esch put the Bears up 3-1 just 1:30 into the third period. McCormick answered with his team-high 10th goal of the season 18 seconds later to make it a 3-2 game, and Wagner tied the score at 14:25 to send it to overtime.
