The Cortland women’s ice hockey team opened its season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at New England College Friday night in non-conference action.
Senior Gwen Paul (Incline Village, NV/San Jose Sharks) and freshman Ally Miller (Potsdam/Potsdam H.S.) netted goals for the Red Dragons, while senior Chelsie Hausberger (West Seneca/Buffalo Bisons) and freshman Nadine de Nijs (Buffalo/Ontario Hockey Academy) picked up assists. Junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 19 shots.
Aubrey Fischer tallied a power-play goal for the Pilgrims with Ashley Bonner collecting an assist on the score. Goalie Lauren Hopps made 24 saves.
After a scoreless first period, New England College took a 1-0 lead when Bonner assisted Fischer’s power-play goal at 15 minutes, eight seconds of the second period.
The Red Dragons tied the score just 50 seconds into the third period as Paul scored off assists from de Nijs and Hausberger. Miller netted the game-winning goal at the 9:09mark on an unassisted effort. Cortland was able to hold off New England College late in the game as the Pilgrims pulled Hopps for an extra skater over the final 52 seconds.
