CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s ice hockey team clinched a spot in the NEWHL playoffs with a 6-0 victory versus Buffalo St. Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 15-4-1 overall and 10-4-1 in the conference, while the Bengals fell to 1-18-1 and 0-13.
Graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) led Cortland with two goals. Senior Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) tallied a goal and an assist, freshmen Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School), and Nat O’Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each netted a goal. Freshman Gillian Zwolak (Stoney Creek, ON/Ancaster Avalanche) recorded four assists, seven others picked up one assist apiece.
Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) made six saves through the first two periods for the Red Dragons. Senior goalie Emily Steen (Windom, MN/Windom H.S.) stopped all six shots she faced in the third period. Freshman goalie Jessica Auge (Laingsburg, MI/Honeybaked Detroit) registered 42 saves for Buffalo St.
Metcalfe opened the scoring 2:27 into the game with a one-time shot in the slot. Schnorr made it a 2-0 score at 3:46, deflecting a shot past Auge. Schnorr then netted her team-high 18th goal of the season at 17:07 of the period with a snap shot from the high slot.
Cortland added two more goals in the second period. Cramer scored with a one timer just outside of the crease at 9:05, and Hlasnick netted a power-play goal at 18:36. O’Brien completed the scoring at 2:29 of the third period for the 6-0 final.
