CORTLAND, N.Y. – Six different players scored goals, led by freshman Kirsten MacDowell’s (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) career-high five points on one goal and four assists, as the Cortland women’s ice hockey team defeated King’s College in non-conference action Friday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 3-7-2 with the win, while the Lady Monarchs fell to 0-8-1.

Four other Cortland players besides MacDowell recorded multi-point games. Junior Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit) and sophomore Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) tallied one goal and two assists, and sophomores Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) and Emily Rose (Clayton/Syracuse Nationals) each chipped in with a goal and an assist. Senior Kianna Gutenmann (Clifton Park/Adirondack Northstars) added a goal, and senior Jackie Richards (Lapeer, MI/Compuware) collected an assist.

Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made her 12th straight start between the pipes for the Red Dragons, stopping all four shots she faced through the first two periods. Junior Victoria Gibson (Essex Junction, VT/Vermont Shamrocks) registered three saves in the third period.

Freshman Gracen Mahoney (St. Catherine’s, ON/Ridley College) netted the goal for King’s. Freshmen Mary Deyell (Glendale, CA/Carlsbad Wildcats) and Josee Aitken (Eyebrow, SK/Prairie Fire) each assisted on the score. Freshman goalie Kiva Sierra Stoltz (Petersburg, ON/North Halton Twisters) made 46 saves.

Cortland grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first period when MacDowell poked in a loose puck at 3:17 and Gutenmann scored on a deflection at 18:47. The lead grew to 4-0 after the second period on King’s goal from the slot at 12:29 and Kolb’s score at 15:57.

Rose scored on a slap shot from the left side at 7:41 of the second period, and Pippin netted a power-play goal at 9:21 to give the Red Dragons a 6-0 lead. Mahoney spoiled Cortland’s shutout bid with a power-play goal just 34 seconds later with a shot from deep in the slot for the 6-1 final.
