Cortland Women’s Hockey Edges SUNY Canton

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit) scored a power-play goal early in the second period to break a 1-1 tie, and the Cortland women’s ice hockey team held on for a 2-1 victory versus SUNY Canton Thursday night in non-conference action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons won their third consecutive game and improved to 5-7-2. The Kangaroos dropped to 6-6-1.

Sophomore Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) also netted a goal for Cortland. Sophomore Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) recorded two assists, while sophomore Emily Rose (Clayton/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) each collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) turned aside 20 shots.

Junior Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK/Swift Current Diamond Energy) tallied Canton’s goal with freshman Ashley Gillies (Timmins, ON/North Bay Ice Boltz) assisting on the score. Sophomore goalie Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Flames) registered 22 saves.

King gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 5:37 of the first period when she slid a shot inside the left post from the right circle. Pele tied the game at 15:03 with a rebound goal in front.

Pippin netted the game winner at 5:25 of the second period, scoring on a wrist shot through traffic from the right point. After Pippin’s goal, each team had several power-play chances but neither could capitalize. The Kangaroos had a late chance with the extra skater but took a penalty with 39 seconds remaining to negate the opportunity. Canton pulled Susac for an extra skater with 24 seconds remaining but could not net the equalizer.
