ITHACA, N.Y. — Doug Derraugh won his 250th game as head coach of the Cornell women’s hockey team as his team marched to a 4-0 over No. 9/9 St. Lawrence Friday night at Lynah Rink.
The seventh-ranked Big Red came out firing seven shots on goal in the first five minutes of the contest. Cornell finished the first period with 11 shots on goal. Though, St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison had the answer each time in net.
Cornell first got on the board with 13:13 left in the second period with a goal from Pippy Gerace. Paige Lewis set the play up by fielding the puck in the offensive zone and sending it over to Lenka Serdar. Serdar then flipped it ahead to Gerace who found the back of the net with the back handed shot.
Gerace, who played in her 100th career game as a member of the Big Red, now has four goals on the season.
Cornell added to its lead with 10:22 left in the third period with a tally from Serdar. The play was set up off of a faceoff at the left circle, which Serdar won before sending the puck back to Jaime Bourbonnais just ahead of the blue line. Bourbonnais held onto the puck long enough to open up a free shot for Willow Slobodzian, who blasted a one-timer towards the goal. Meanwhile Serdar was crashing the net and got a piece of the puck for the redirect goal.
With the assist, Jamie Bourbonnais extended her point streak to seven games. The junior defensemen has tallied a point in all but one of the games she’s played in this season. Additionally, Slobodzian extended her point streak to three games.
Trailing by two with 6:38 left to play in the third and going on the power play, St. Lawrence opted to pull Harrison out of net. Cornell tacked on two empty-netters from Paige Lewis and Maddie Mills, respectively, which put the game out of reach.45113
The win also marks the Big Red’s third shutout of the season. Senior Marlène Boissonnault notched her 12th career shutout, which ties her with Kathryn LoPresti (1985-88) for the third most in program history. Additionally, this marks Boissonnault’s 42nd career win, which is tied for the fourth most in program history with Paula Voorheis (2013-16). Boissonnault finished the contest with 18 saves.
The Big Red’s penalty kill unit was tested four times on the night and each time had the answer.
The game also paired as the annual United Way game. For every fan in attendance, a dollar was donated to the United Way of Tompkins County.
The Big Red returns to action at 3 p.m. for another top-10 matchup as takes on two-time defending national champion No. 3/3 Clarkson at Lynah Rink.
