CORTLAND, N.Y. — Fredonia earned a SUNYAC road point Friday with its 5-5 overtime tie with Cortland in men’s hockey.
Five different players had goals for the Blue Devils (3-4-2 overall / 2-4-2 SUNYAC), who led 5-2 early in the third period, only to have the Red Dragons rally.
Kyle Jelinski (Edmonton, Alberta), Luke Rivera (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), Samuel Wilbur (Saginaw, Mich.), Jimmy Morgan (Highlands Ranch, Col.), and Mitch Kaufmann (Red Deer, Alberta) did the scoring. Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas), Benjamin Casale (Lewiston, N.Y.), and Rich DeMarco (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) had two assists each. Rivera also had an assist to go with his goal.
Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) was credited with 32 saves.
Fredonia led first, 1-0, on a goal by Jelinsk, his third of the season, from Ortiz and Casale. Cortland ended the period up 2-1 after goals by Dan Broderick and Shane Bennett, the second coming at 18:45.
A goal by Rivera, his fifth, from Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.) and DeMarco midway through the second period was the start of a four-goal streak by the Blue Devils. Wilbur followed with an unassisted goal, his third, ahead of power-play goals by Morgan, his second, from Ortiz and Casale, and by DeMarco, his first as a collegian, from DeMarco and Rivera. Morgn scored at 19:32 of the second period and Kaufmann at 4:01 of the third.
Cortland closed out the period with goals by Dray Zack, Darren McCormick, and Casie Garrison, in a span of just over five minutes.
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday at Oswego.
