ITHACA, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey announced Tuesday that Cornell freshman Alex Green has been named the league’s Rookie of the Week.

Despite being a defenseman, Green was tied for the league lead in points last week (four) thanks to a pair of two-point games in Big Red victories. On Tuesday against Niagara, Green spurred the Big Red’s rally from two goals down in the third period by scoring his first collegiate goal, then setting up Brendan Smith’s game-tying tally. On Saturday against Boston University at Madison Square Garden, Green had a pair of assists in the Big Red’s 4-3 victory to capture the Kelley-Harkness Cup and improve Cornell’s record to 9-1 for the first time in 15 years. His plus-3 rating for the week was also tied for best in the league.

While all five of his collegiate points have come in the last four games, Green has been making a marvelous transition to college hockey. The team’s youngest defenseman, Green has been frequently paired with sophomore Yanni Kaldis at even strength while also seeing time on the power play and on the penalty kill.

Green earned the Big Red’s third ECAC Hockey weekly award of the season, with senior forward Trevor Yates being named the Player of the Week on Oct. 31 and freshman Matthew Galajda taking home Goalie of the Week honors on Nov. 14.

Now 9-1 for the first time since the 2002-03 season, #5/5 Cornell closes out its fall semester schedule this weekend with a pair of non-league games Friday and Saturday at Miami (OH).
