Elmira Women Defeat Cortland

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Eight different players scored goals as the nationally second-ranked Elmira women’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 10-2, in ECAC West action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference with the setback. The Soaring Eagles improved to 3-0 and 1-0.

Junior Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) and sophomore Makenzie Wright (Burlington, ON/New Jersey Rockets) each tallied a goal for Cortland with senior Abbie Adams (Potsdam/Cornwall Typhoons) and sophomore Ashley Terry (Redford/Chazy Lady Flyers) recording an assist apiece. Junior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) stopped 30 shots through the first two periods before giving way to sophomore Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets), who made nine saves in the third period.

Ashton Hogan paced Elmira with three goals, Erin Weston and Cassidy Delainey each registered one goal and one assist and five others netted one goal apiece. Ashley Ryan contributed six assists, and Brooke Wilgosh registered five assists. Goalie Kierra Pietramala turned aside 20 shots.

The Soaring Eagles opened up a 3-0 lead after the first period with goals from three different players. Elmira extended the lead to 5-0 early in the second period before Drew netted her first goal of the season off Terry’s assist on the power play at 5:46. Hogan and Piku closed the period with goals just 58 seconds apart late in the period to make it a 7-1 game.

Nystrom pushed the lead to 8-1 with a short-handed goal at 8:33 of the third, and Wright connected on the power play at 9:41 to make it 8-2. Elmira closed the game with even-strength goals from Lippiatt Durnell at 11:34 and McDonald at 17:15.
