UTICA, N.Y. — The Elmira College women’s ice hockey team held on for an all-important 3-2 road victory against Utica College on Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. With the win, the Soaring Eagles remain unbeaten at 4-0-0 (4-0-0 UCH), while the Pioneers drop to 3-4-0 (2-3-0 UCHC).

Utica struck first in tonight’s United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) bout with tally from Alexa Carlon at the 9:09 mark of the first period. The Utica lead did not stand for long, as Eliza Beaudin ’22 leveled the contest with her second goal of the season at 10:30. Emma Crocker ’21 and Morgan Mordini ’22 picked up assists on the equalizer.

Jess Adams ’21 broke the stalemate just 2:36 into the second period with her third goal of the season. Tristen Tolan ’21 and Jenny Heath ’22 were credited with assists on the go-ahead goal.

The Soaring Eagles outshot the Pioneers, 15-5, in the second period, swinging momentum in their favor. However, Utica’s Savannah Gutierrez came up with 14 saves in the period to keep it a one-goal game.

Elmira doubled Utica’s shot count in the third period, 10-5. One of the 10 shots came from the blade of Mary McCafferty’22, who netted her first goal of the season at 13:59 to give the Purple and Gold a two-goal cushion. Devyn Gilman ’21 and Holley Riva ’23 assisted on the tally.

With the game coming to a close, Utica pulled Gutierrez from net to skate 6-on-5. The call from the bench paid off as Carlon potted her second goal of the night with 16 seconds left on the scoreboard. The extra-attacker goal pulled the Pioneers to within one of Elmira, 3-2, but the Soaring Eagles held on through the final horn to secure their fourth victory of the year.

Elizabeth Hanson ’21 made a total of 18 saves in 60 minutes of work between the pipes. Of her 18 stops, nine were registered in the first period. For Gutierrez, she amassed 38 saves, 29 of which were made in the first two periods of play.
