ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Elmira College’s Devyn Gilman ’21 was tabbed the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Women’s Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, after leading the No. 3/3-ranked Soaring Eagles to a pair of conference wins against Stevenson University over the weekend.
Gilman, a native of Yorba Linda, California, logged a team-leading five points with one goal and four assists to help guide the Purple and Gold past the Mustangs by scores of 7-1 and 7-0 at the Murray Athletic Center on Friday and Saturday. She tallied a team-best three points (1g-2a) in the series opener, with her lone goal coming on the power play in the third period. In the weekend finale, she dished out helpers on EC’s two third-period tallies, including an assist on a power-play goal from Maddy Jerolman ’19.
EC’s first-year forward is finding her groove on the ice as her debut season progresses. Gilman has registered multiple points in each of the last three games, including consecutive outings with a season-high three points against King’s (3a) and the aforementioned one-goal, two-assist performance against Stevenson. Overall, Gilman has amassed eight of her season’s nine points in the past three contests and leads the nation’s freshmen with a 1.80 points per game average. Should she finish her debut campaign atop this category, Gilman would join the late, great Laura Hurd ’05 as one of only two Soaring Eagles to lead the country in freshman scoring.
Gilman and the EC women will take a short break from conference play this weekend, as the Soaring Eagles trek north to Plattsburgh, New York, to participate in the UNO Classic, hosted by the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State. Elmira will begin the ultra-tough tournament with a 7:00 p.m. contest against the No. 6/6-ranked Middlebury Panthers on Saturday, November 25, at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
