Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Lockport defeated New York in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO).
The shootout featured four attempts between both teams. Lockport’s other shootout goal was scored by Nicholas Wilcox.
Lockport came back from a four-goal deficit to capture the victory. Lockport trailed 4-0 after a power play goal by New York’s Corey Rees at 6:22 in the second period. Lockport knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Ryan Logar at 18:06 in the third period.
Lockport forced New York goalie Stephen Mundinger to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. Lockport struggled on the penalty kill, allowing New York to score three power play goals on four chances.
Lockport was helped by Dylan Jenkins, who racked up one goal. Jenkins scored on the power play 17:37 into the third period to make the score 5-4 New York. A instigator penalty on Gunther Stange had put Lockport on the power play. Wilcox provided the assist. Lockport also got points from Justin Durkee, who also had one goal and one assist and Wilcox, who also registered one goal and one assist. Lockport also got a goal from Greg Terlov as well. Other players who recorded assists for Lockport were Christopher Gasiewicz, who had two and Jordan Pocobello and Frank II Vecchio, who each chipped in one.
New York was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 33.0 minutes per game New York had been spending in the box. Lockport was unable to stop New York from sending pucks towards the net, and New York eventually piled up 73 shots on goal.
New York was helped by Seth Muzyl, who finished with one goal. Muzyl scored on the power play 7:57 into the first period to make the score 2-0 New York. New York had taken the advantage when Lockport’s John Gannon got sent off for tripping. Daniel Backstrom picked up the assist. Lockport ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Erick Santiago was ejected from the game. New York’s Mundinger stopped 37 shots out of the 42 that he faced. For New York, Stange and Ryan Poirier were ejected from the contest.
