SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five new Orange have been added to the Syracuse ice hockey roster for the 2014-15 season, head coach Paul Flanagan announced on Friday, April 4. Megan Quinn, Alysha Burriss, Abbey Miller, Stephanie Grossi and Emily Costales each signed national letters of intent to play for SU’s in its seventh season.

Flanagan found a class of leaders, featuring four former team captains. Four of the incoming freshmen come to Syracuse from Canada, all of whom played on their provincial teams. Quinn and Burriss hail from Ontario, Costales from British Colombia and Grossi from Manitoba. Miller is the lone American, coming from Minnesota.
“Our staff and program are very excited about the potential of our incoming 2014 class,” Flanagan said. “All five recruits are coming off excellent individual seasons and will bring plenty of enthusiasm and athleticism to our campus in the fall. As we prepare to graduate the largest class (seven seniors) in our program`s short history, we feel this group can come in and help us continue to build our roster depth and have an immediate impact on our program.”
Miller (Anoka, Minn.) will add much needed depth to the goalie unit. Previously playing for Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School where she led her team to the Minnesota State Championship, finishing as the runner-up. With an impressive 22-3-1 record, 1.57 goals against average and .917 save percentage during the 2013-14 season, Miller was named to the All-State Second Team, the All-Metro Second Team, the All-Conference Team and set the state record for career shutouts with 29. During her junior campaign she was named to the All-State Second Team and All-Conference Team, leading the state in both goals against average and save percentage. Miller was also a member of her high school softball team where she served as team captain in her junior and senior years.
Burriss, Grossi and Costales will provide help up front, coming in as forwards. Burris (Napanee, Ontario) scored 51 points including 24 goals in 36 games played during her recent season with the Durham West Junior Lightening. She also played for Team Ontario Blue, making it to the 2013 National U18 Championships where she took home a silver medal.
Grossi (Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished her pre-collegiate career with the Shaftesbury Prep, serving as co-captain, and with Team Manitoba, serving as the captain. Last season she scored 88 points on 37 goals and 51 assists for the Titans and earned a silver medal with Team Manitoba in 2012. She was also named to the Female Worlds Sports School Challenge All-Star First Team.
Costales (Vancouver, British Columbia) played for the Pacific Steelers (JWHL) before becoming an Orange. In 31 games played with the Steelers, she notched 25 points including 12 goals. She was named to the JWHL All-Star and All-Academic teams and served as the team captain. Costales also played for Team British Columbia in 2012 and Team Alberta in 2013.
Quinn (Belleville, Ontario) is the lone defenseman that has committed to Syracuse thus far. A teammate of Burris, she played for the Durham West Junior Lightening where she was an assistant captain. She also played for St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School, serving as the team’s captain. In 2013-14, she recorded 16 points on four goals and 12 assists. Of her four goals, three were on the power play and the other was shorthanded. As a member of Team Ontario Red, she won the 2013 National U18 Championship and participated in the Team Canada Camp the following summer.
