UTICA, NY – Utica College freshman goalie Michael Fredrick (Lethbridge, Alberta/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) was named the ECAC West Rookie of the Week on Monday after helping the Pioneers to a 1-0-1 record to open up conference play over the weekend at Nazareth.
Fredrick totaled 54 saves over the course of two games last weekend. On Friday, he turned aside 31-of-32 shots in a 4-1 victory over the Golden Flyers. He also added 23 saves in the Pioneers 2-2 tie at Naz.
In three games this season, he has 80 saves and a 1.62 goals against average in 185:00 of work. His 1.62 goals against average ranks second in the conference, while his save percentage of .941 also ranks second in the ECAC West.
Utica boasts the top scoring defense in the conference and they are also the least penalized team in the conference with an average of just 7.3 penalty minutes per game. The Pioneers have not allowed a power-play goal all season as they are 11-for-11 on the penalty kill. They are also the only team in the conference to have not allowed a first period goal.
The Pioneers (2-0-1, 1-0-1 ECAC West) return home this weekend for a pair of conference games against Elmira on Friday at 7 p.m. and Hobart on Saturday at 7 p.m.
