No. 4 Plattsburgh State Women’s Ice Hockey Skates Past SUNY Potsdam, 6-1

POTSDAM, N.Y. — No. 4 Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey remained undefeated in Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL) play with a 6-1 victory over SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Ice Arena on Friday night.

Plattsburgh State (7-2-0, 6-0-0 NEWHL) travels to SUNY Canton for a NEWHL game tomorrow at 3 p.m. Potsdam (2-6-1, 0-4-1 NEWHL) hosts Buffalo State for a NEWHL game tomorrow at 3 p.m. 

Plattsburgh State took a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored her eighth goal of the season as she redirected a shot by first-year defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) to make the score 1-0 at 5:27 of the first period. 

Senior forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) made the score 2-0 at 11:09 of the first period. Graduate student forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) chipped the puck out of the right corner to Unsworth. Unsworth skated around the back of the net on a wraparound play and scored on a wrist shot inside the far post. 

The Cardinals outscored the Bears, 2-1, in the second period to take a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.

Sophomore forward Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, Ill./North American Hockey Academy) scored her third goal of the season on a deke to make the score 3-0 at 10:12 of the second period. Unsworth and junior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) assisted on the play. 

The Bears took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to make the score 3-1 at 12:59 of the second period. Kaylee Merrill redirected a shot for the goal. Ellie Cleary and Lyvia Chambers assisted on the play.

Senior forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) scored her first goal of the season on a rebound to push the Cardinal lead to 4-1 at 17:39 of the second period. Senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) and Boric assisted on the play.

The Cardinals added on two power-play goals in the third period to make the final score 6-1.

Unsworth scored her second goal of the game to make the score 5-1 at 2:13 of the first period on a low wrist shot from the slot. Krauseneck and graduate student defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) tallied the assists.  

Drew-Mead made the final score 6-1 with a goal at 11:58 of the third period. An initial shot by Drew-Mead was saved, but she got her own rebound and scored on a low wrist shot from close range. Wasik and first-year forward Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tallied the assists. 

Junior goaltender Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 16 saves to improve to 3-1-0 on the season. Hannah Barrett (1-3-0) made 43 saves for Potsdam.

The Cardinals were 2-of-5 on the power play.

Plattsburgh State outshot Potsdam, 49-17.

WILLIAM SMITH BLANKS PLYMOUTH STATE

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team knocked off Plymouth State 1-0 in New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. The Herons snapped a  six-game losing streak to improve to 3-8-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league play.
 
Mackenzie O’Neil scored the game-winning goal in the first period. Amanda Aalto made 20 saves as she earned her second shutout of the season.
 
Olivia Petito played 58:43 minutes in goal for the Panthers (4-5-1, 2-3-0). She made 27 saves.
 
A tightly contested game from the opening whistle, William Smith finished the contest with a slight 28-20 edge in shots on goal. Plymouth State had the game’s only power play but could not convert with the extra attacker.
 
Emma Faso had the game’s first scoring opportunity at the 1:32 mark of the first period. She fired a shot from the slot that was turned aside by Petito. Two minutes later, Faso again had a chance denied by Petito. Plymouth State’s first scoring chance came at the 4:22 mark of the opening period. Georgia McLellan’s attempt from the point was saved by Aalto. Just before the 10-minute mark of the frame, Brit Foster ripped a shot from the high slot off of the left goal post.
 
William Smith opened the scoring at the 17:35 mark of the first period. O’Neil wristed a shot into the upper left corner of the cage. Mia LaPlante and Izzy Friedman were credited with assists on O’Neil’s first collegiate goal.
 
The Panthers seized momentum in the early stages of the second period. Marissa Pickman and Robyn Grant had chances from the left faceoff circle turned aside by Aalto. O’Neil nearly added her second goal of the game at the eight-minute mark of the middle period. Her shot from the high slot hit the goal post. William Smith piled the pressure on in the closing stages of the second period, but they could not get a second shot past Petito.
 
Plymouth State controlled the early play in the third period, but Aalto stood tall to preserve the shutout. The Panthers’ lone power play came in the second period, but the Panthers could only manage one shot on goal with the extra attacker.
 
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Dec. 4, when it welcomes Castleton to the Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

OSWEBO COMES FROM BEHIND TO TOP CORTLAND IN WOMEN’S HOCKEY

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego women’s hockey team closed the third period with three consecutive goals to earn a come-from-behind, 5-4, victory over Cortland Friday night in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Lakers improved to 6-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference. The Red Dragons fell to 5-2 and 3-2.

Despite the defeat, Cortland graduate student Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) became Cortland’s career leader in points since the program was re-established in the 2000-01 season, picking up a goal and two assists. Schnorr raised her point total to 68 on a record-best 42 goals and 26 assists, breaking the mark of 67 points set by Dani Blanchard from 2002-06.

Graduate student Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames), junior Elena Eichmann (Rochester/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Destiny Bautista (Quesnel, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) each added a goal for the Red Dragons. Seniors Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) and Emily Kromer (Angola/Nazareth College), juniors Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) and Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Gillian Zwolak (Stoney Creek, ON/Ancaster Avalanche) collected one assist apiece.

Sophomore goalie Anna Hamid (Mineola/New Jersey Colonials) registered 24 saves for the Red Dragons. Sophomore goalie Joanna Hiebert (Highland, MI/Meijer) made 22 saves for the Lakers.

Freshman Mack Hull (Watertown/Northwood School) led Oswego with two goals. Sophomore Kyleigh Grugin (Knoxville, TN/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and freshmen Simone Bednarik (Elmhurst, IL/HC SKP Bratislava) and Lizzie Burke (San Jose, CA/St. Louis AAA Blues) each netted a goal. Senior Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, ON/Morrisville St.) recorded two assists, while four others each picked up one assist.
