Geneseo Defeats Cortland, 5-3

GENESEO, N.Y. – Five different players scored goals as the Geneseo men’s hockey team defeated Cortland, 5-3, in SUNYAC action Friday night. The Red Dragons fell to 9-10-3 overall and 3-8-2 in the conference with the setback, while the Knights improved to 10-8-3 and 8-5.

Freshman Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) led Cortland with a pair of goals. Freshman Darren McCormick (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied one goal and one assist, senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) recorded two assists and freshman Brendan Pascarella (Sloatsburg/Hartfoed Jr. Wolfpack) contributed one assist. Freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) turned aside 41 shots.

Ryna Stanimir recorded one goal and two assists for Geneseo. Tyler Brickler and Justin Scharfe each had one goal and one assist, Stephen Collins and Ryan Donnelly netted one goal apiece and four others collected one assist. Nick Horrigan started in goal, making nine saves in 43:59 before giving way to Bryan Haude, who stopped nine shots over the final 16:01.

Collins gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead at 1:07 of the first period, but Broderick tied the game with a short-handed goal just over a minute later. The Knights took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission on goals from Stanimir on the power play at 3:04 and Scharfe at 7:29.

Donnelly netted the lone goal of the second period at 15:50 to make it a 4-1 game, and Brickler put Geneseo up 5-1 early in the third period. Cortland answered with McCormick’s goal at 7:12, and Broderick notched his second of the game just 22 seconds later to pull Cortland to within 5-3. Just past the midway point of the period, Cortland had 1:49 of a two-man advantage on the power play but could not convert and the Knights held on for the win.
