GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Conlan Keenan scored the first three goals of his collegiate career while senior forward Stephen Collins (2 goals, 3 assists) and senior forward Trevor Hills (2 goals, 2 assists) helped lead the No. 4 Knights to an 11-2 victory over Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men’s ice hockey action, Friday.
Geneseo finished the night with the most goals scored since an 11-1 victory over visiting Buffalo State on Jan. 29, 2005. It was also the first double-digit scoring output in four seasons dating back to a 10-3 victory at Cortland (Jan. 25, 2013).
Collins notched a power-play goal 1:09 into the game as Geneseo (2-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) built a 4-0 first-period lead. First-year forward Devin Brink notched the first goal of his collegiate career with 15:10 to play before Keenan notched a power-play tally for his first with 9:15 left. Hills got into the action with a tally with 3:55 on the clock to close the period.
It only took 45 seconds of the second period for Hills to find Collins for the 5-0 edge. Cortland got on the board with 9:19 on the clock, before Keenan put the home team back on top by five, 6-1, with 16 seconds left prior to the second intermission.
Geneseo scored two more times in the first three minutes of the third period on a power-play tally by sophomore forward Arthur Gordon and the first goal of the season by senior forward RJ Burns. Junior forward Sotiri Athanasopoulos scored with 12:08 remaining before Hills netted his second goal with 9:16 to play as the Knights built a 10-1 lead.
Cortland stopped the run with a tally with 3:36 left before Keenan completed the hat-trick with 4:35 on the clock to close the scoring.
Sophomore goalie Devin McDonald was credited with 21 saves in over 42 minutes of work to pick up his second victory of the season before senior Matt Leon added 10 saves down the stretch.
Geneseo will hit the road on Saturday to take on Oswego in a 7:00 p.m. SUNYAC showdown.
