POTSDAM, N.Y.- Junior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) records two goals for the Bears in their 3-1 victory over Saint Michael’s College Friday night. Sophomore Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) finished with two assists on the night. The Bears improve to 8-10-1, including 6-4 in the last 10 games.
Late in the first period, Greene lit the lamp for the Bears to get them on the board. Greene carried in the high slot, chipped the puck through a Purple Knight, caught up to the pass and skated in alone to Saint Michael’s goalie Tina Frasca, deking once and slipping a shot home at 16:57. Potsdam took the one score advantage into the break.
The Bears made it a 2-0 contest at 5:14 of the second period. Ott had an initial shot stopped by Frasca, but the rebound popped out to the right post and senior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) recorded to goal. Defensive stops by both teams held the offense to six shots a piece during the stanza.
Jillian Witwicki drew the Purple Knights within one goal 5:58 into the third period, picking the upper right corner from the slot following a scramble out front during a power play. The Purple Knights were the beneficiaries of two more power plays in the stanza, including during a 5-on-3 advantage that lasted for 29 seconds, but the best chance for either team came when junior forward Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) skated in alone with her squad down one woman with 4:17 remaining. Frasca denied that bid with her right pad. As the game continued and the clock winded down, Frasca was pulled for an extra skater with 1:32 left and Greene clinched the win by scoring from near center ice as 25 seconds remained on the clock.
“Alison, Jordan and Izzy were our offensive punch tonight”, said head coach Jay Green. “Rachel Grefke and Katie Marsman played solid defense throughout the game with Rodrigue powerful between the posts.”
Junior goalie Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) finished with 22 saves while her counterpart Frasca stopped 24.
Bears host Neumann University next weekend in a conference doubleheader Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
